    Phiota becomes Fulbright Scholar

    Washington, D.C. - May 2007

    A member of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was awarded a U.S. Fulbright scholarship.

    Andres "Distraccion" Carter a recent graduate of the A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, was awarded a grant to conduct research on the role of architecture in the shantytowns and favelas of Brazil through the U.S. Fulbright Program.

    A New York native, Mr. Carter has made various trips to Brasil. It was there that Mr. Carter developed an interest in the impact of architecture and design in developing nations.

    Mr. Carter will join the ranks of more than 279,500 "Fulbrighters," 105,400 from the United States and 174,100 from other countries, that have participated in the Program since its inception sixty years ago. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 6,000 new grants annually. Thirty-six Fulbrighters have been awarded Nobel Prizes. The U.S. Fulbright program remains one of the leading scholarship programs in the United States.

    Sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright Program provides funding for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. The flagship international educational program sponsored by the U.S. Government, the Fulbright Program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and the people other countries.
