José Julian Martí Scholarship![]() The Distinguished Brothers of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. Epsilon Chapter, would like to announce to the public information regarding our: Don José Julian Martí ScholarshipA $300 Scholarship will be awarded to the student (female/male) who meets or exceeds the following requirements Purpose: This annual award is to recognize an undergraduate student who best exemplifies the life of Don José Martí. Don José Martí, "El Apostol" devoted his life to the independence of Cuba. His teachings and writings on the socio-political injustices of Spanish Colonialism led to his exile from four different countries. Still, he continued to fight against the oppression of his people, not just in Cuba, but also in all of Latin America. He believed in the ideal of "Pan-Americanism:" the unification of Latin American countries. Don José Martí was an intellectual; his most potent weapon was his pen, and it is for this reason that the scholarship is named in his honor. Eligibility: Any undergraduate male/female with sophomore standing and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is eligible to apply. Award: $300.00Procedure for Applying: 1) Two letters of recommendation from a faculty, employer, or staff member. 2) Undergraduate transcript 3) The Completion of 1 Minority Based Community Service Project. Eg: habitat for humanity or soup kitchen. If working, you may include your job as the project. 4)A typed essay of 2-3 pages on how your hard work and dedication to the Latino community exemplifies the life of Don José Martí.
